In December, 2014 Mike Olsen was diagnosed with a little known chronic lung disease called Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis. It causes progressive scarring of the lungs and it is fatal. It is the result of a faulty immune response by the body. Mike is working to raise awareness about this disease. Check out the Mike Olsen Project on Vimeo. It is a beautifully produced video about his plight.
IPF stands for Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis. It is a fatal restrictive lung disease. Idiopathic means doctors don’t know why you developed it. Fibrosis is the progressive scarring of the lungs. As your lungs harden they become unable to transfer oxygen to your blood and you suffocate and pass away. I saw this man with a red Trump hat at the ER. He has clubbed fingers and blue lips. I know how he feels. I have severe anxiety and it sometimes makes me short of breath. It is a frightening feeling. Sometimes when I am breathless I worry that a misdiagnosis of interstitial lung disease that I had is actually correct. BTW clubbed fingers are pretty strange. They almost look like cartoon hands. If I am indeed dying from it and only have it in its early stages – I will know I am doomed when I start turning into a cartoon.
